The redevelopment of the Old Post Office into the new Fashion Museum Bath (FMB) represents a significant cultural investment, combining the sensitive adaptation of an historic site with an ambitious vision for public engagement, collections care and modern museum delivery. Mortice was appointed by Bath & North East Somerset Council (B&NES) to support the project throughout its planning stage, providing specialist operational, management and maintenance advice to inform the museum’s long‑term sustainability.
Our work focused on developing clear, practical outputs to support addressing the challenges associated with operating a public‑facing cultural venue, while protecting an internationally significant collection.
Our Approach
We worked closely with Bath & North East Somerset Council to translate the project’s ambitious vision into clear, practical operational outputs suited to an historic city‑centre museum. Our focus was on anticipating operational risks early and embedding compliant, workable solutions at planning stage.
We prepared a comprehensive Management and Maintenance Plan, aligned with National Heritage Lottery Fund (NHLF) guidance, to support the long‑term operation of the building while safeguarding its internationally significant collection. This was supported by comprehensive documentation, registers and resources, linking day‑to‑day operational tasks with the equipment required to deliver them across facilities management, front of house, collections care, learning and security.
Together, these interlinked documents establish a realistic, sustainable operational foundation, enabling Fashion Museum Bath to open with confidence and operate successfully for the long term.
