Mortice have been partnered with Imperial War Museums (IWM) as its trusted sustainability consultant since 2021, providing long‑term strategic guidance across a complex, multi‑site organisation.

A key focus of the partnership has been the development and delivery of IWM’s Sustainability Strategy. Mortice has worked closely with teams across the organisation to embed sustainability and social value into everyday decision‑making and activities, ensuring it is not treated as a standalone initiative, but as a defining element of how IWM plans, procures, operates, and delivers its public mission.

Our Approach

We worked in close partnership with IWM to embed sustainability as a core business principle, translating strategic ambition into practical, measurable outcomes across a complex multi‑site estate. We led the development and integration of IWM’s Sustainability Strategy, ensuring it informed governance, operations, procurement, and FM, while remaining sensitive to the unique operational and heritage requirements of each site.

Procurement was a key driver of change. We integrated sustainability and social value into tender processes, ensuring bidders aligned with IWM’s Sustainability Roadmap and demonstrated clear delivery plans. This included assessing carbon reduction methodologies, local employment, community impact, and contractor social value commitments. This helped to standardise sustainable service delivery across all sites.

To support long‑term delivery, Mortice built internal capability, with comprehensive resources and training. Ongoing support now focuses on strengthening sustainability governance, embedding sustainability into end‑to‑end project lifecycles, advancing sustainable procurement, and supporting IWM’s decarbonisation journey.
