Following detailed surveys of their off‑site collection storage facilities, National Museums Liverpool (NML) identified the need for targeted intervention to improve safety, efficiency and long‑term care of their stored collections. Mortice were appointed to lead the planning of this work, ahead of a multi‑stage programme to address the whole building.
This initial phase established a clear understanding of challenges across the stores, ranging from racking condition, load capacities, to object movement logistics and documentation accuracy. This provided the foundation for an efficient and scalable methodology.
Using these insights, we developed and tested a comprehensive approach within a priority pilot space. This allowed the team to refine processes for storage upgrades, collection movement and documentation before applying them more broadly. The project subsequently progressed into full delivery in late 2025, involving intensive planning, development of operational procedures, and the coordination of expert teams to safely decant, document and improve storage for approximately 1,800 items.
Our Approach
Our approach combined strategic planning, specialist expertise and a carefully structured delivery model. We established clear, repeatable processes for every aspect of delivery, including hazard assessments, room inventory, and repalletisation. A dedicated project information suite, ensured consistent, safe and compliant working practices throughout.
As work progressed, core activities were delivered in an integrated and continuous sequence to maintain efficiency. Initial efforts focused on defining storage layouts, identifying equipment requirements and stress‑testing processes. This was followed by the physical preparation of the store, installation of improved racking, object movement, and the introduction of new documentation systems. Repalletisation and the return of collections to their upgraded storage environment were carried out using specialist materials and procedures, to support long‑term conservation. Throughout the project, we sought opportunities for added value; improving conditions, refining processes and capturing insights to inform future phases, while also providing ongoing strategic recommendations to help NML build a scalable, future‑ready storage framework.
