As Imperial War Museums (IWM) advanced the development of its sustainability strategy, it became clear that meaningful cultural change would require more than policies alone – it would require people. Training and education emerged as essential requirements for embedding sustainability into the everyday language, decisions, and behaviours of staff across the organisation.
To unlock this cultural shift, IWM identified Carbon Literacy as a foundational competency needed at all levels, from leadership to operational teams. The goal was simple: build shared understanding, confidence, and engagement in carbon reduction as a core part of IWM’s broader sustainability ambitions.
Having partnered with IWM to develop their sustainability strategy, Mortice were invited to design and deliver a bespoke Carbon Literacy training programme tailored specifically to the organisation’s needs, culture, and strategic direction.
Our Approach
We created an independent, fully customised Carbon Literacy course for IWM, designed to:
- Strengthen understanding of carbon emissions and their organisational impact
- Build a common language around sustainability across departments
- Equip staff with practical tools to support carbon reduction in their roles
- Deepen engagement with the sustainability strategy by connecting concepts to real, everyday actions
- Provide accredited training that reinforces IWM’s commitment to continuous improvement
The programme was structured as a rolling series of in-person learning days, complemented by supporting activities to ensure staff could apply their learning effectively.
